Children’s Church & Nursery
At St. Mark’s we welcome children of every age at all worship services. We are blessed by their presence among us and know them to be signs of God’s Kingdom. We notice—to our joy—that the signs seem to be multiplying.
Children’s Church is held at both 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services during the academic year (10 a.m. during the summer months) and is designed for the spiritual lives of children age 3-10 years old (Godly Play, at both the 9 & 11 a.m. services, in the Common Room for ages 3-6; Storymakers, at the 11 a.m. service, for ages 7-10). Children are dismissed with a prayer after the Collect of the Day (near the beginning of the service) and then rejoin their parents before Communion.
Godly Play, for children ages 3-6, helps children explore their faith in ways that are relevant to their developmental stage - story, wonder, and play." The Rev. Dr. Jerome Berryman developed Godly Play through a lifetime of research and practice based on Montessori principles. The curriculum reflects the church's calendar, traditions, and beliefs. It exists to serve children in their discovery of God's presence in our lives, and introduces them to the language and practices of Christian congregations in a way that encourages their own spiritual flourishing in our community. StoryMakers, for children ages 7-10: in this new curriculum, children encounter God’s love for them through entering into the beauty and creativity of God’s great story of redemption. Drama, art, play, and guided reflection bring the biblical narratives to life in the imagination of children. “Our approach to God’s story is without any expectation that he requires anything from us; rather he provides the relationship that comes from his redemptive actions toward us.” - storymakersnyc.com
The nursery is available for younger children (from crawling babies – 3 year olds) every Sunday from 8:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. during the academic year (9:45 - 11:15 a.m in the summer months). Children of all ages are encouraged to worship with their parents in the sanctuary. If your child becomes restless during the service, rocking chairs are set up in the Narthex for your convenience. In the Narthex, you’ll also find coloring book pages with crayons and a small children’s library for your and your child’s use.
